Preserving the USS Olympia - a Protected Cruiser

The USS Olympia, which fought in the Spanish American War of 1898 has been preserved and is a valuable piece of US maritime history. Unfortunately, Olympia needs $10-15 million in repairs to keep her a viable museum for years to come. She has not been out of water for approximately 40 years. The POM Bomb


When you consider all that happy talk as Admiral Roughead was going out the door about making sure ships can make it 30, 35, 50, 75 years - this data point should provide the real Roughead legacy, in a fashion.

Via a forwarded email, Names removed to protect pretty much everyone involved. In part;
Based upon the ALT POM changes- the Department plans to inactivate the ships below:

CG (FY 13): 60, 68, 69, 71
CG (FY 14): 59, 63, 64, 65, 66
LSD (FY 14): 41, 43, 46

While there may be some further discussion with the CGs with respect to which ones in which year- these are the hull numbers (and OPNAV concurred).

Per 10 USC 2244A, any modernization (except safety modifications or modifications costing less than $100K) is not allowed within 5 years of retirement/disposal. NAVSEA (any SYSCOM) should not provide FY 12 (or remaining FY 11) procurement funds to any of the above platforms (except safety modifications). If funds are already spent on these platforms, that is okay given that these are recent changes. The key is to ensure no new money is being spent.
+/- a year or two, this is where we are:
- USS CAPE ST. GEORGE (CG-71) was commissioned in 1993. In FY13 she will be, yes Liberal Arts math here - 20 years old.
- USS PRINCETON (CG-59), commissioned in 1989 in FY14 will be 25 years old.
- USS WHIDBEY ISLAND (LSD-41) commissioned in 1985 will in FY14 be 29 years old;

Making History

ARABIAN GULF (Aug. 22, 2011) An MV-22B Osprey assigned to Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron (VMM) 263 embarked aboard the multipurpose amphibious assault ship USS Bataan (LHD 5) transfers an AV-8B Harrier engine from the Military Sealift Command dry cargo and ammunition ship USNS Wally Schirra (T-AKE 8) to Bataan. This was the first time this type of lift has been conducted at sea by and MV-22B. Bataan is the command ship of the Bataan Amphibious Ready Group conducting maritime security operations and theater security cooperation efforts in the U.S. 5th Fleet area of responsibility. An eagle-eyed reader named “Mike” wrote us over the weekend to make an interesting point about the Navy’s photo illustration released the day the Navy announced that the second Gerald R. Ford-class carrier will be named in honor of John F. Kennedy. His point? That ain’t no Ford.
“There’s plenty of renderings of the Ford Class available for use, and with the differences between classes you might as well be showing a picture of the Forrestal.”
Right you are. The carrier below JFK’s head is actually the Abraham Lincoln. The image was shot March 2 as the ship made its way across the Pacific near the end of its most-recent deployment. You can see the photo in its natural habitat here.
Ford and its follow-ons will look more like this.

Schedules for Art Exhibitions Released
From the museum's earliest days, aviation art has been a featured complement to the acclaimed aircraft collection, bringing to life on canvas and in vivid colors the historic people, places, ships, and aircraft in naval aviation history.  During 2011-2012, two exibitions continue this tradition.  The first takes place in May 2011 with a show by members of the American Society of Aviation Artists, who will be holding their annual meeting at the museum during celebrations for the Centennial of Naval Aviation.

A popular event for many years, the museum's biannual Naval Aviation Art Contest will take place in May 2012.  Those wishing to submit works of art for judging should contact Ms. Robbie Musgrove at 850-452-3604, ext. 3119 or robbie.musgrove@navy.mil.  Winning entries will be displayed at the museum from May 2012 through April 2013

The Navy League of the United States, Twin Cities Council announces the Keel Authentication Ceremony for the future     
USS Minnesota SSN 783!

On Friday, May 20, 2011 at 12:00 noon the Keel Authentication Ceremony will take place at the Huntington Ingalls Industries shipyard in Newport News, VA www.huntingtoningalls.com.

  • In July 2008, the United States Navy announced that our state would be honored by having a warship named ‘Minnesota.’  Not since 1922 have we had a US Navy warship named after our state.

  • Officially known as Precommissioning Unit (PCU) Minnesota, the Virginia-class fast attack submarine will receive its ‘USS’ designator once commissioned (estimated in June 2013).

  • The Keel Authentication Ceremony is a time-honored tradition that includes having the signature of the Ships Sponsor welded into the keel of this ship.  The Sponsor then announces that ‘the keel is truly and fairly laid.

  • This ceremony marks the first in three major milestones of bringing PCU Minnesota to the fleet.

  • PCU Minnesota is being built in the same shipyard as the previous two USS Minnesota’s, and just five miles from one of the most famous naval battles in history that prominently featured the first USS Minnesota in the Civil War (the famed ‘Minnesota’ connection we see in many news stories).

It's been said that the key weapon system in our military will be the fast attack sub in the 21st century. This is a weapon system we need more of.

We need a balance in our Navy - LHD's, CVN's, DDG's, cruisers, SSN's, SSBN's, and SSGN's.

But our fast attack submarine force should be as large as the DDG force, now at about 60 copies.

We need to be as hidden under the sea as we need to be visible on the surface with the DDG's playing 'gunboat' diplomacy.

US service personnel play key part in Libya campaign even as US withdraws from front-line role

The United States, which originally led the Libya campaign, has been steadily reducing its role over the past two weeks. On March 31, it handed over command and control of the international campaign to NATO, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, and shortly after that it ceased all attack missions over Libya — setting of a search by NATO for more planes capable of carrying out precision strikes against Gadhafi's forces.
NATO said Friday that the U.S. still flies one-third of the Libya operation's missions. But that refers to surveillance and refuelling missions, not to attack flights over Libyan territory.
But even though the U.S. has withdrawn its forces from the front lines of the NATO campaign, a handful of Americans serving on this French navy carrier remain at the forefront of the action.
They are members of a little-known French-American naval exchange program in which U.S. officers spend time in the French navy — known as the "Marine Nationale" — and French officers spend time in the U.S. navy.
